The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The former head of state was convicted of planning a government overthrow in last fall and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.
High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.
This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a document approving the custody, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.
His son, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our country."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of his transfer to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of planning to ask for protection through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the United States embassy in the capital, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist US President President Trump, causing him to enact a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a custody hearing on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to murder the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.
The plot was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, the capital city.
The law enforcement stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the period, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The former president called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
