In the early hours of Saturday morning, reports emerged of major explosions rocking Tehran, following statements from Israel that it had carried out a preventative strike.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were heard in the city on Saturday. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were observed rising over the centre and east of the city.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a missile attack,” one news agency reported, though it did not immediately provide further details.
Background: Escalating Tensions and Recent Developments
The incident takes place against a background of sharply increased strains in the Middle East. Major events preceding this strike involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the United States and Iran on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with suggestions of further talks scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or confront severe consequences.
Iranian Response
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian officials had charged the United States of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. They dismissed assertions about missile development and casualty figures as unfounded.
The situation is fluid, with further updates anticipated as the situation develops.
